The World Cup 2018 in Russia

The host-country of the 21st FIFA World Cup became Russia Federation for the first time in its history. It was officially announced on the 2nd of December 2010 o behalf of the represantatives of FIFA in Zurich. In addition to Russia the candidates for the orgaization of theWorld Cup 2018 were also Spain, Portugal, Belgium and the Netherlands, Great Britain.

So the tornament for the first time will take place in Eastern Europe, on the territory of the two parts of the world - Europe and Asia and former Soviet Union. The matches of the final stage of the tournament, in which will participate 32 national teams (devided into 8 groups), which have successfully passed through the qualifiers, will take place from the 14th June to the 15th July in 11 cities in Russia in 12 different stadiums.

In the qualifiers will take part 209 national teams from all the continents over the world, devided into 6 confederations: Africa, Asia, Europe, North and Central America, South America, Oceania. The qualifiers will take place from the March 2015 to the November 2017. All 32 teams-participants of the final stage will be determined according to the results of qualifying matches. The team of the host-country (Russia) becomes a participant of the final stage automatically.

According to the results of the qalifying matches, in which will participate 209 national teams from all over the world, will be determined 31 the best and strongest teams, which will take part in the final stage of the World Cup. In addition, according to the regulations, the host-country Russia wil participate auctomatically. Thus the total number of counties-participants of the World Cup 2018 is 32.

The national team of the host-country (Russian team) becomes a participant automatically. According to the results of a draw all teams are devided into 8 groups, 4 teams in each group.

Shedule and results

The matches of the group stage will take place in 11 cities in Russia from the 14th to the 28th June. Play-offs: 1/8 finals - from the 30th June to the 3d July, 1/4 finals - the 6th and 7th July, semifinals in Saint-Petersburg - on the 10th July and in Moscow - on the 11th July. And finally, the game for the 3d place will take place in Saint-Petersburg on the 14th July and the final match in Moscow on 15h July.
